The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage gives a translation of "place of Hau" for Ōhau, but an alternative meaning could be "windy place". Ōhau is the smallest of three roughly parallel lakes running north-south along the northern edge of the Mackenzie Basin (the others are Lake Pukaki and Lake Tekapo). It covers 60 km².

The Lake Ōhau Track is part of the long-distance Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail. This track will take you along the Lake Ōhau shoreline with stunning views of Ben Ohau Peak and the lake. What a magnificent day. I started out driving along Lake Ohau to reach the start of the trail near Greta Lodge. The lake itself looked stunning.. Lake Ohau is located an easy hour and a quarter's drive from Aoraki Mt Cook. Ohau is a remote holiday hideaway with numerous walking tracks, the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail and the Ohau Snow Fields. Turn onto Lake Ohau Road which is about half-way between Twizel and Omarama on State Highway 85.

The Scenic Drive to Lake Ohau. My favourite part of our trip to Lake Ohau was the scenic drive to get there. We visited in October (spring time) and it had recently snowed a lot, so the hills and mountains surrounding the road to Lake Ohau were covered in snow. It was an awesome drive - maybe not so breathtaking without a good helping of snow.

In 1951 Sir Harry Wigley purchased and transported these buildings from Lake Pukaki. Lake Ohau Lodge was opened in time for the summer season with thirty bedrooms, a dining room and lounge with an impressive local stone fire place, which all remain part of the Lodge today. Riding, fishing, tramping and other excursions were available on request.
